Preparations

As National Grid prepare ahead of 2022’s network assurance exercise this year and consumers reel at the price hikes that will hit their energy bills in the foreboding winter ahead; the Development Platform that Power Initiatives have recently launched will play a significant role in the coming years in keeping the lights on across the United Kingdom.

Organised blackouts this winter are possible as the heatwave of summer 2022 fades into a distant memory, and geopolitical issues across Europe continue to impact gas availability. Documents from a governmental leak have warned that a “reasonable worst-case scenario” may result in outages for consumers if temperatures drop below average and gas availability from Europe reduces.

Exercise ‘Degree’

The annual Gas Industry’s annual Network Gas Supply Emergency (NGSE) Network Emergency Coordinator (NEC) assurance exercise will take place on four dates, the 13th & 14th of September and the 4th& 5th of October.

Exercise ‘Degree’ will test the resilience and communication of all stakeholders in reaction to a Network Gas Supply Emergency and show the preparedness to react. It will test gas and electricity participants such as government agencies, energy firms, regulators, and lobby groups’ ability to respond to a gas supply shortage and other related scenarios that could affect the national electricity system.

Resilient Supply Network

The need to reinforce the networks across the UK is imperative if we are to have a resilient supply network that can face any issues head-on and keep the country operational. Power Initiatives via their Development Platform are fast-tracking sites pre-screened for investors and developers to roll out power generation/storage plants quicker to market to maximise the opportunities the uncertain energy supply market is presenting.

The Future

It is also clear that the future of power generation fed by renewables with battery storage and longer-term alternative energy fuels such as hydrogen will support the drive to net zero.

Still, in the short term, resilience, and energy security needs additional power generation to add capacity to the network. Capacity is achievable if developers and investors find a quicker and easier route to a ROI. The Power Initiative Development Platform delivers speed and eases market entrance for investors and developers alike.
