‘SHOVEL READY’

To build a new energy asset, it is essential that the relevant rights, permissions and permits are in place in order to do so.
To achieve ‘Shovel Ready’ status, each plant must have:
- Relevant planning consent to construct.
 - An electricity export agreement with the local Distribution Network Operator (DNO) to import / export electricity generated on the local electricity (grid) network.
 - A gas supply contract to fuel the generators within the plant (for gas-powered assets).
 - A land agreement - usually through a long-term lease or freehold acquisition.
 - Environment Agency environmental permit.
 
Once these steps have been taken and an asset has achieved ‘Shovel Ready’ status, it can be carried forward into construction and ultimately on to operation.
